What is the concept behind industrial grade and grade B?
Industrial Grade: This is the standard grade of aluminium metal. It is generally considered a technical grade and is regarded as the highest quality in the market.
Grade B: These materials are generally not up to the industrial grade, but they have populated the market and are cheaper alternatives for those on a budget.
Size and Thickness of Aluminium Sheets
Firstly, the cost of roofing sheets is largely dependent on their size and thickness.
Also, larger sheets carry a higher price compared to their smaller counterparts, while thicker sheets command a greater cost due to the additional material required during manufacture.
When embarking on a roofing project, it’s crucial to consider the specific requirements that will impact the size and thickness of the materials you choose. Not only does this affect the overall cost, but it also ensures the safety and longevity of your roof.
Let’s look into the details:
1. Material Thickness and Project Type:
– For industrial structures like warehouses built with Iron Steel, opting for thicker roofing material is advisable. Typically, 0.70mm or even 1mm gauge sheets are preferred due to their durability and ability to withstand heavy loads.
– However, residential buildings with wooden frameworks require a different approach. Using such thick gauges can be problematic—they add excessive weight and may compromise the structural integrity of the roof. Imagine a roof that could actually fall (yes, FALL!) due to the excess load.
2. Recommended Gauges for Homeowners:
– As a homeowner, you’ll want to strike the right balance between strength and practicality. Here are the three most recommended gauges:
– 0.45mm: A versatile choice suitable for various areas with little rainfall or areas with little wind pressure
– 0.50mm: Also a versatile choice which is slightly thicker, providing enhanced durability without being overly heavy.
– 0.55mm: Strikes a good balance—sturdy enough for longevity, yet manageable in weight.
Furthermore, remember your roofing project’s success hinges on making informed decisions about material thickness.

Quality and Grade of Aluminium
Secondly, the quality and grade of roofing sheets can greatly impact their price. In Lagos, we have the standard grade and the general market grade.
As a result, the standard grade is also referred to as the architectural grade as they are way thicker and way more expensive.
However, for most average homeowners they are unaffordable.
This is why the market is littered with what we call the market grade that serves the same quality as the standard grade but does not measure up in terms of thickness.
It is advisable to consult with a professional roofing contractor or supplier to determine the appropriate grade for your specific project requirements.
In terms of quality, the best standard mostly known to Lagosians is what we know as Bozac Standard or Dodo Standard.
This is because both materials are known to be oven baked which makes the colours not fade easily, they also do not rust as they contain little to no trace of Iron or Zinc.
Today, in the market, there is usually a difference of N200 to N300 on every Bozac and Non-Bozac material which is why it has become hard for innocent customers to tell the difference.
Conclusion
Lastly, the cost of aluminium roofing sheets depends on various factors that can vary depending on your location and project specifications.
However, aluminium roofing sheets offer many benefits that make them worth the investment in the long run. They can save you money on cooling and energy costs, increase the resale value of your home, and last for decades with minimal maintenance.
